( ENLIGHTENMENT.)

THE YOUTHS OF NOW A DAYS MUST BE ENLIGHTENING THEM SELVES ON GOOD DEEDS.

The youths are not enough to Enlighten themselves, lack of Enlightenment is affecting the Youth, What Cause the Lack of Enlightenment is what the Youth sees in our Environments, Societies, Cities, Nations, Countries, Continents etc.

The likes of our Great Elders and the Leaders what they are doing that is not good is what we the Youth Sees, that is not a Good Deeds, we should correct Ourselves on it and the Youth should Enlighten themselves On it, the mistakes that our Elders and Great Elders and our Leaders did in the Pasted and Presents; because some youths knows that is not a good deeds is forbidden for you as a youth to do so, because what goes around comes around.

It is Forbidden for you as a youth when you sees the Rise AND Fails of the heroes Pass and you want to get into what Fails the heroes passed, it is PROHIBITED and not Advisable to be into that pit.

The Youths are not Enough to Enlighten themselves, that what you can Accept is what you Must DO to One Another.

*WHO IS A YOUTH.

Who is a youth? Many definitions have been given on who a youth is, but none seems exhaustive because definition itself is a social construct to capture social reality. Words are usually constructed and defined in order to understand and think to what exist at a particular time of life history. Thus, many scholarly attempts have been made to actually capture the definition of a youth. A youth is someone who is between a childhood age and adulthood age. How then is someone’s childhood or adulthood status determined or measured? According to Wikipedia(2008),this is determined by a person’s physical, mental and psychological state of mind. Most times, youths are referred to as those persons possessing certain distinct physical characteristics which include: Ability to think fast, ability to display much energy towards the actualization of goals, assertive and resistant personality, and ability to change a state of art. Thus, youths are expected to be the most active population of a country. The higher the number of youth, the higher should be the quantity of wealth and national income, all things being equal. But the reverse has been the case in most developing countries of the world where the youths are either rendered redundant or marginalized by a clique of opportunists. It is important to note that one of the most frequently asked questions about the demographic profile of a youth 228 Int. J. Sociol. Anthropol. the most highly referred economists of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries had argued the growth of free market economies and capitalist mode of production would increase the wealth of nations. Having seen the effects of industrialization on European markets, the colonial imperialists saw the significance of expanding their labour and capital markets beyond the fall walls of Europe and they embarked on the policy of colonization. This was prompted by the fact that many European countries needed raw materials from other parts and continents of the world to brace up their economies (Ake, 1981; Johnson, 1969). Thus, the need to colonize the perceived less developed people of the world became the priority of the European super powers, which made them embark on policy designs that would suit the exploration and exploitation of the natural resources of these people. This was largely the antecedents of colonial imperialism that led to the mass rush of Europeans to Africa, and that of their various representatives of their governments. It was this that also facilitated the forceful cession of Lagos to the “British Empire”in London in 1861.By this action, Lagos was carved out of its traditional societies, as a prominent town in Yoruba kingdom, and then made and referred to as the colony of Lagos. This began the process of colonization of Nigeria and most parts of Africa by the British and other European voyagers. For administrative convenience, the Northern and Southern protectorates of Nigeria were separately administered during the early periods of colonialism until 1900 when the colonial masters decided to bring the two protectorates together as a matter of urgency. According to the British colonial masters, by 1914, it was no longer possible to govern protectorates because of the huge possible to govern protectorates because of the huge cost being incurred by the colonial office. This policy decision, then, led to the amalgamation of the Colony of Lagos with the Northern and Southern Protectorates. This was the process that led to the birth of Nigeria, and to the birth of the Nigerian colonial state. The colonial state ruled for more than 60 years under the indirect rule system, this in no small measure left most Nigerians in the agony of poverty, racial discrimination, economic marginalization, ethnic chauvinism, political disengagement and cultural dislocation. It was through the combined efforts of the Pan Africanists and the Nigerian Youth Movement that led to the attainment of political independence for Nigeria in 1960. No wonder, late Chief Obafemi Awolowo was full of condemnations for the emergent post-colonial state when he was convicted for treasonable felony in 1960s. He said, “I must say with respect, and this may have to be taken up with a higher tribunal that I do not agree with your Lordship‟s verdict and the premises on which it is based. For upwards of 30 years, I have been in politics in  consequences of military rule. On the economy, the introduction of the Structural Adjustment Programme(SAP)exacerbated economic hardships while the majority of the Nigerian people were suffering particularly the poor and the youth. Again this was one opportunity for the youth to demonstrate that the military government had failed, which they did through nationwide protests that halted academic activities in the universities and higher institutions of learning. There was a national protest in 1986 and 1989 on SAP.Up till 1993, one could say that the Nigerian youth were very active in fighting national course(Adejumobi, 2003).The struggles for liberation from military authoritarianism continued up till May 1999. However, the dimension that the struggles took after the military disengagement from politics was more volatile than what was expected before the hanging over.

*WHAT YOU SHOULD DO AS A YOUTH.

* As a youth you must offer a special pledge; to convert your good words into good deeds, in a new alliance for progress, to assist free men and free governments in casting off the chains of poverty.

* And so, as a youth ask not what country will do for you, ask what you can do for your country, as you demand something from your country, your country is demanding something from you back, as a reward of what you ask.

* My fellow citizens of the world ask not what your country will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man.

* As a youth you must have hope and aspirations for your country.

* As a youth what good deeds do you contribute every day to make your country great.

* with a good conscience, our only sure reward, with history the final judge of our deeds, as a youth, let us go forth to lead the land we love, asking his blessing and his help, but knowing that here on earth God’s work must truly be our own.

* As a youth let the love of your country be on your mind as your own priority.

* Young people need to be more innovative and visionary.

* As a youth you should think of new solutions for old problems.

* Finally, whether you are youth or not or citizens of the world ask of us here the same high standards of strength and sacrifice which we ask of you.

*WHAT YOU SHOULD NOT DO AS A YOUTH.

* RAPE:- Rape is an acts of forcing your selves on the person that don’t wish or willing to have fun, is not only woman they  raped, mean while they also raped a man too, woman raped a man if she love the man but the man is not willing to do that such acts with the woman, as a woman that want to rape, she will try is possible best to take actions on the man, she will drug the man or invite the man to a secret place, where no one can witness what is happening, any one that is caught, if is the person that attempt to raped or the person that they raped, the result of the acts is no remedy, that you will be charge to court, from there you have become a rapist,  you can’t predict what will happen next. As a youth (say NO to rapist).

* CULTISM:- Many youths of now a days fall prey of cultism activities and this might becomes a war in them for the rest of time, as dealing in cultist acts equate putting your life on the line each time their activities are carried out, if you were caught they will declare you as a wanted and suspect, before you know they charge you to court, and the result of your acts is to go prison, and it can lead you to life imprisonment or dead by hanging, or become a prisoner and ex-convict. (as a youth say NO to cultism).

* DRUG/ABUSE:- Abuse of drugs/alcohol is at the top of the list of problems in Nigeria today. This problem is particularly prevalent among the youth of the country.

Drugs such as codeine, cocaine, marijuana, Indian hemp, Colorado  etc. have led to the untimely deaths of many youths. Many can be seen drinking and smoking with reckless abandonment at parties, public places and deserted buildings, without care for their health or future. This act usually lead to drunken driving, crimes, or death due to overdose.

Song by popular musicians glorifying the act of drug abuse does not help matter either. Youths usually steal to fund their habits and their subsequent lack of focus in their school endeavors will lead to poor academic performance and eventual dropout. It also affects those in the work force as they put out poor job performance leading to their sack. (say NO to drug abuse).

* LAZINESS:- A lead contemporary problem affecting the youths is laziness. The idea of small work and big money is the aim of most modern youths.

This is why many of them do not invest their time in their careers or in handiworks. Instead they take to short cuts such as scams, money laundering and thuggery with the aim of putting in minimal effort to get to the Promised Land. Today’s youth want to be Aliko Dangote in one night.

This problem have prevented many youths from politically occupying positions because the older generation sees them as unserious bunch who are incapable of ruling the nation and making it a better place.

It has also help glorify the criminals among them who have managed to pull scams and go scot-free, spreading our country’s name in the mud in the global hemisphere.

Lastly, laziness also leads to unemployment as some people are satisfied with just getting certificates and not making extra efforts to have technical know-hows and skills, or the zeal to create. (Say NO to laziness).

* SMOKE:-THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION (WHO) Says smokers are liable to die young, is not only die young, smokes makes you to misbehave and loss your senses. (say NO to smoke).

EXAMINATION MALPRACTICE:- This is another major problem among the youths today. The problem of examination malpractice is destroying the value of meritocracy in Nigeria’s educational system. Virtually everybody must be blamed for the syndrome. Long years of neglect of the educational sector, negligence of proficiency and professionalism by successive governments have led to the serious degeneration of Nigeria’s educational values. Most of the youths believe in cheap marks rather than reading hard to pass.  SAY NO TO (EXAMINATION MALPRACTICE).

CULTISM AND GANGS OF ASSASSINS:- Today, both urban and campus violence are part and parcel of routine experiences largely because successive military and civilian regimes had paid leap services to the needs and aspirations of the next generation whom they would meet at their old age or left behind after their death. Even in the present democracy, majority of government officials are much more concerned with what comes into their pockets rather than what they can do to better the lots of the citizenry as the dividends of democracy. The consequences of all these are monumental on the behavior of the youth. This is one of the reasons why Nigeria’s Ivory Towers have been turned to theatre of wars. Last year, over 20 students lost their lives in a cult clash in one of the old Nigerian Universities. This was not enough for governments at all levels to accelerate the sensitization of Nigerian youths against cultism in Nigerian higher institutions of learning. Stories have been heard of adolescent cultists in some of Nigeria’s secondary schools. The character of the youth is largely the character of the state and society in which citizens find themselves (Momoh, 2002). SAY NO TO (CULTISM AND GANGS OF ASSASSINS).

THE PREVALENCE OF YOUTH IN ARMED ROBBERY:-  In most Nigerian cities, especially in Lagos, youth gangs, in and around the city have in recent times formed the habits of tormenting the lives of the ordinary citizenry day and night. This trend began in the 1980s but has changed in tempo and dimensions in contemporary Nigeria. A report in the TELL Magazine of July 21st, 2001 was very interesting and revealing about this phenomenon. It goes like this: „Perhaps, no other incident symbolizes the existence of graduate robbers in Nigeria today than what happened on Thursday, June 8. That day, a luxury bus had left Kaduna for Lagos. Shortly after the bus passed Lokoja, capital of Kogi State, it ran into a gang of armed robbers. The robbers, driving in a jeep, overtook the bus and forced the driver to bring the bus to a halt. In a jiffy, four young men, wearing designer dresses, came round and shot the police escort, who was seriously wounded. He was also dispossessed of his gun. The robbers then ordered all the passengers to disembark. The terrified passengers quickly complied. The robbers started frisking the passengers‟ pockets and dispossessing them of money and other valuables. By the time they were through and were about to leave the scene, one of the victims, a youth corps member who had just finished his orientation in Kaduna, was shoved aside by one of the robbers. He staggered and his cap fell from his pocket. The robber saw the cap and picked it up. Then, he exclaimed: “So you are a corper”? The frightened corps member said yes. Immediately, the robbers “countenance changed. They then lowered their guns and ordered the corps member to be separated from the other passengers. Their leader apologized, saying “Sorry, o we did not know that you are a corper. We do not rob corpers”!The gang leader then asked: “Why are you not in your uniform?” But before the corps member could answer, the gang leader added: You should have travelled in your uniform”. The episode triggered off a flurry of sympathetic actions by the gang. They asked to know if there were more corps members among the passengers. And there were a few others. The corps members were asked to file out to one side of the bus with evidence to prove their claims. Once this was done, the robbers started introducing themselves. They said all of them were graduates from Nigerian Universities, just like the corps members. One the youth. Even the allowances being paid to the National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) members are just too small to cater for the needs of most of these young graduates who are probably from poor homes. What of those Areas Boys met every day in city corridors? Does the Nigerian government have any serious policy for them than the preventive and punitive measures of the so called civilian dictators? AS A YOUTH (SAY NO TO ARMED ROBBERY).

*10 WAYS YOUTH CAN MAKE AN IMPACT.

1. Know your rights:- You might not be able to vote yet, but all children and youth hold national and international rights. These rights are only of use to you if you are informed about them, so read up!

2. Learn about local issues:- Is a roadblock affecting your commute to school? Are the new taxes affecting your family’s livelihood? Whatever the case, learning the issue will help in creating solutions that will have an impact on you.

3. Speak out:- Speaking your mind online (through social media), and/or offline (at local meetings and gatherings) helps you assert yourself and your interests. Also, you never know who might be listening. Think before posting. Social media has a long memory and things can never truly be deleted.

4. Network:- There are many inspiring youth like you around the world. Reach out to them. Learn about their efforts and initiatives, they might also work for you!

Start connecting with other groups.

5. Spread the word:- If elections are taking place, spread the word! Talk to friends and family about registering to vote. If there are important issues that are going unaddressed, become the person who addresses them (such as this young woman in Ireland). You are part of a community, and have the power to educate and influence those around you.

6. Join online campaigns:- Is there an issue you are concerned about? Global campaigns are always happening. Find one that corresponds to your issue, join in, and implement the campaign locally.

7. Host a youth summit:- Learn and share your perspectives and views with peers as well as decision-makers. Schools and local organizations can be of great support to you in trying to create a forum for the exchange of ideas. Bring together different communities and understand what you have in common, as well as your differences in interests and perspectives.

8. Use your creativity:- Photography, arts and crafts, dance, theatre, sports, street art. Almost anything can be turned into an activist project. What are you good at? Translate it into civic activism!

Need inspiration? Here are some activist projects from Creative Visions (Creative Activists Network).

9. Join/create a youth organization:- Local youth organizations are great places to expand your knowledge and become an active member of your society. If your community doesn’t have an organization representing youth, create one. Be the trendsetter!

10. Be an inspiration:- Believe in yourself, and follow your passion. Passionate youth will change the world.

*17 WAYS YOUNG PEOPLE ARE CHANGING THE WORLD.

Right now, 1.8 billion young people between the ages of 10 and 24 are studying, working and finding their purpose. They are the largest youth population the world has ever seen, and they are growing up at a time when the world is at a critical crossroad.

2016 marks the first year of action to meet the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Young people are willing and able to contribute to this global agenda to end poverty, fight inequality and tackle climate change by 2030.

Here are some ways that young people worldwide are working to change the world.

Goal 1:- No poverty

In, Burundi, knowledge is power to end poverty, one village at a time.

In partnership with UNDP, Bibliothèque sans frontières (Libraries Without Borders) young staff travel across Burundi, spreading IDEA boxes, libraries containing e-books and paperbacks, educational toys and games, internet-ready mobile devices and other materials. Remote villages turn to these mobile libraries for knowledge, news, culture and to find common ground as they rebuild their societies after armed conflict and civil war.

Goal 2:- Zero hunger

The road to zero hunger rests on the shoulders of a new generation of young people like Mercy and Shetuuka. They are sibling farmers working to reduce hunger and create jobs in Namibia through environmentally friendly farming. Using drip irrigation, their efforts yield 100,000 Namibian dollars each month in sweet potatoes, onions, butternuts, cabbages, watermelons, tomatoes and green peppers, 30 percent more than the average yield for three hectares (about three football fields) of farmland.

Goal 3: Good health and well-being

Although the practice is illegal in many countries, each year, 3 million girls under the age of 15 undergo female genital mutilation, the practice of removing all or part of the genital organs for non-medical reasons.

Many of the girls who survive female genital mutilation will grow up to face lifelong health issues such as severe bleeding and problems urinating, cysts, infections, as well as future complications in childbirth.

In Egypt, a group of tiny activists has been traveling village to village, determined to end this practice in their country.

Goal 4: Quality education

One-third of girls in Afghanistan will never get a chance to go to school. Third grader Bahara from Gozo Omerz School in rural Panjshir was that one in three until a bridge helped to change her life.

One of UNDP’s 600 transportation projects to promote economic development in rural Afghanistan, the bridge led to more boys and girls enrolling in primary school, including little Bahara, by addressing safety concerns on the village’s main road.

Goal 5: Gender equality

Worldwide, women are still under-represented in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. In India, with the world’s largest youth population, things are beginning to change.

More than 40 percent of Indians are under the age of 20, and young women are breaking the glass ceiling by pursuing more technical areas of work like engineering. Women now make up 30 percent of computer programmers in India, and they’re gaining ground in other STEM professions.

Goal 6: Clean water and sanitation

About 783 million people in the world do not have access to safe water. This is roughly 11 percent of the world’s population. Getting clean water for survival and for sanitation is even more challenging in the midst of war.

In Syria, where war has forced 45 percent of the population to flee their homes, young people with UNDP’s Cash for Work projects and youth volunteers are a lifeline for the 13.5 million people in need of humanitarian assistance who remain inside Syria.

Goal 7: Affordable and clean energy

As countries work to meet greenhouse gas reduction targets as part of the historic Paris Agreement on climate change, many are turning to greener energy solutions.

When Max and Dariya were 14, their science project on smart energy won third place in a school competition in Astana, Kyrgyzstan. Now in ninth grade, the teenagers’ science project is a working part of their school’s affordable and clean energy plan.

The school has already saved 30 percent in heating and electricity bills and avoided 103.8 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in the first year of adopting Max and Dariya’s project.

Goal 8: Decent work and economic growth

Education and skills training are vital to prepare the next generation for the workforce and for adulthood. In Côte d’Ivoire, with UNDP, these young people, former soldiers, are learning the skill sets they need to build industry and infrastructure in their nation.

Goal 9: Industry, innovation and infrastructure

In Rwanda and other countries, government services are going digital.

Young developers created a mobile application with us that citizens can use to access and track progress on government services like business license renewals, community nuisance reports, broken pipelines and other issues.

Goal 10: Reduced inequalities

Afro-Colombian communities living on the Pacific coast have historically experienced high levels of poverty and inequality. This is reflected in the high unemployment rates, especially among young people and women.

Since 2010, through UNDP’s “Growing Together” programme in Colombia, over 2,300 young people have completed leadership, business management and job training. Youth from the programme have set up 57 businesses, while others are contributing to local businesses in need of skilled workers.

Goal 11: Sustainable cities and communities

By 2050, 66 percent of the world will live in cities, up from 54 percent today. Creating jobs for the world’s 73 million unemployed youth is critical to meet the demands of urban growth.

After taking part in a UNDP self-employment programme, Mirjeta returned to Kosovo* to not only establish a textile market, but also to set an example for improving working conditions in the manufacturing industry.

Goal 12: Responsible consumption and production

Peter from Zambia is one of the millions of young people working with his community to ensure villages use and consume natural resources responsibly for long term sustainability.

By day, he’s a school teacher. In his free time, Peter teaches local farmers about sustainable farming and food processing methods.

Goal 13: Climate action

Coastal communities worldwide are at risk from flooding, rising sea levels and other impacts of climate change.

These young people in Papua New Guinea are among hundreds of young environmentalists who volunteer to plant mangroves. The mangroves protect communities from storm surges, provide a habitat for a variety of wildlife and store carbon to regulate greenhouse gas emissions.

Goal 14: Life below water

For small island nations like the Maldives, the flattest country on earth, meeting Goal 14 is a matter of survival as sea levels rise. Through coral reef restoration, mangrove planting and other efforts, these young environmentalists are diving in to save their homeland.

Goal 15: Life on land

Despite the beautiful landscapes and resilient mountain people, life in the mountains of Nepal can be a struggle. Land degradation is making it increasingly difficult to earn a living off the land, forcing many rural youth to leave home in search of work.

As part of their local 4H club, and to invest in their future, these young environmental activists are restoring 10 hectares (about 10 football fields) of barren land, transforming it into sustainable agro-forestry plantations filled with fruit trees, grazing grass and fuel wood.

Goal 16: Peace, justice and strong institutions

Decades of civil war have created a brain drain in Somalia, with many talented young people emigrating in search of safety and economic opportunity.

Lul from Mogadishu is working to reverse this trend. She and 44 other graduates are part of UNDP’s Young Graduates in Parliament project, bringing their education and skills to bear to strengthen governance and the prospects for lasting peace.

Goal 17: Partnerships

Meeting these 17 Sustainable Development Goals requires a global partnership with youth playing a central role.

In Turkey, 16-year-old Asrat plans to do her part by becoming a teacher. She’s taking advantage of skills training from the Hisar Antatolian Support Society. Funded through a partnership with Coca Cola, the Society offers skills trainings for young women from rural communities.
